COVID-19 Silicone Edge Graphic Solution: Duke Fans Back in the Stands

Rendering to Reality: Fan Presence Silicone Edge Graphic Solution Allows Duke Fans Back in the Stands

SEG Systems partners with ZEBRADOG to create a COVID-19

solution for Duke University’s Men’s Basketball Arena

In 2020, ZEBRADOG had an idea for Cameron Indoor Stadium and its fans. Or lack thereof shall we say.  The world was struck with the COVID-19 virus with mandated shutdowns and large gatherings being limited for the unforeseeable future. College Basketball and all sports were forced to think of alternative ways to play without any fans present. While safety is the number one priority, they realized teams thrive on having their fans at their games. ZEBRADOG designed a creative fan presence solution using silicone edge graphics for the Blue Devils with the goal of creating an intimate visual narrative that put “fans” back in the stands.

About the Space

Duke Men’s Basketball has 5 NCAA Championships under their belt, so it should come as no surprise that their stadium, Cameron Indoor Stadium is often regarded as the “epicenter of basketball.” Seating just 9,000 Blue Devils for each game, Cameron Indoor Stadium required a design that retained the intimate feel of the fans and players coming together under one roof while still keeping safety in mind.

ZEBRADOG came to SEG Systems with their ‘larger than life’ plans for the stadium, knowing that our capabilities and services could help execute this COVID-19 solution to the finish line! The design was presented as 5 large frame graphics printed with the always rowdy ‘Cameron Crazies.’ These custom sewn graphics were placed at both baselines, while three of the court length banners were placed directly in the Student Section, home of the 1,200 ‘Crazies.’

Rachel Curtis and Debbie Savarino who lead the Bluedevil Gameday Experience Team were critical in the sourcing and strategic planning of the Crazies fan pictures. The visual fan presence program uses more than 150 individual photos from various years all digitally stitched together by ZEBRADOG to create a very amazing experience. The Duke Team looks to use this system well into the future for special events. A bad circumstance turned into a long term opportunity. That’s the best part!

Each frame was custom-fitted by SEG Systems to its corresponding bleachers using our Tube extrusions with custom brackets. With SEG Systems lightweight, easy to assemble materials and onsite install services, we were able to have the entire Cameron Indoor Stadium installed in under 8 hours! ZEBRADOG entrusted our company with having quality products, at a cost-efficient price that delivered on time. The scale of each graphic gave a larger-than-life atmosphere as if the ‘Cameron Crazies’ showed up for the game. The realistic feel not only transcended to the stadium and the players but to viewers at home during broadcast games.

University of Miami Hall of Fame

Miami Hall of Fame

Over the years, SEG Systems and Jack Porter, a design firm based out of Greenville, South Carolina, have built a relationship that allows for collaborative projects. With a partnership based on mutual trust and passion for incredible spaces, several projects have come to life using Jack Porter’s design and storytelling skills and SEG Systems’ technology and manufacturing capabilities.

On particularly incredible transformation was the University of Miami Hall of Fame experience. With over 300 players drafted to the NFL since 1960, the school wanted to give those players the recognition they deserve.

Jack Porter came to SEG Systems with a design and site survey and asked us to execute their vision: an NFL Awards Corridor. The plan was to include player statistics and names, a 3D lit logo, and an infinity mirror for the illusion of depth in the corridor.

Like aluminum, millwork is one of SEG Systems’ many capabilities. The foundation for this experiential piece was built from wood that would become the landing pad for the SEG fabric frame lightboxes and custom frame and lightbox accessories. The millwork archway was built into an existing alcove in the room so that every square inch was used to fill the space.

As NFL statistics change weekly (except for the off-season of course. What a sad, sad time.), Miami wanted to be able to easily update a number in the corridor to represent statistics such as all-time passing yards, receiving yards, rushing yards, takeaways, and more. To do this, SEG Systems installed digital number counters that connected to the internet so statistics could be updated in a flash. Isn’t technology just great?

Keeping Current

To illuminate the names of Miami’s NFL draftees, SEG installed 1.5” aluminum frames along the wall with light guided panels (LGP) to shine through white silicone edge graphics. Glass was then mounted on top with blockout vinyl die-cut to each player’s information. The LGP allowed the white lightboxes to shine through the die-cut vinyl, displaying a clear and crisp message along every step.

University of Miami wanted their Hall of Fame experience to be able to grow through the years. Since players are drafted yearly (good-season-willing), several blank strips of black blockout vinyl were used to fill in the remaining spaces for two reasons: one – to make the space look complete, and two – so that those strips could easily be removed and replaced with future NFL players from Miami.

An infinity mirror was built using a steel shroud with an inset mirror and then mounted to the millwork arch. SEG Systems also covered the mirror in etched vinyl that boasted the NFL logo. The etched vinyl expanded the reflection capabilities once the Perimeter LEDs were installed. SEG Systems topped the piece off with a ¼” glass with one-way mirrored window film on it. By using this effect, we were able to create an endless number of reflections and enhance the Hall of Fame experience exponentially.

The Miami lit logo was the final step to completing the experience. This 3D lit logo is a prominent feature constructed of acrylic, aluminum, PMS color matched paint, and 6000k tape lights.

Miami asked, Jack Porter designed, and together with SEG Systems, they delivered. Through partnership, SEG Systems is able to expand our network and enhance our capabilities. We believe that successful partnerships are the key to our success.

Trade Show Time: Pack in the Customer Experience

Trade Show Time: Pack in the Customer Experience

Palmer Hamilton is a furniture manufacturer that provides turn-key design, layout, and installation to the K-12, higher education, commercial and hospitality industries, and fab labs. Like SEG Systems, the folks at Palmer Hamilton are aware that nowadays, purchases are based on the customer experience and trade show experience.

When you think of places people don’t typically want to be, consider the surroundings that usually come with those places:

HOSPITALS

Hollow halls and white walls

CAFETERIAS

Miles of uncomfortable (and unsightly) tables and chairs

LIBRARIES

Bleak and outdated shelves with nowhere to truly relax

Hospitals, cafeterias, and libraries are just the start of the list when it comes to places that lack a customer experience. What does it take, though? Palmer Hamilton and SEG Systems believe that the customer experience makes you want to be there (and want to keep coming back). Upgrading these spaces could be as simple as installing a vinyl wall wrap or SEG fabric frames.

Palmer Hamilton has created some phenomenal environments using their printing capabilities and products, but they can’t just take that with them to a trade show to promote their brand… or can they? With fabric frames in mind, Palmer Hamilton’s interior designer, Sarah Baergen, was able to emulate those environments by “using freestanding frames as a vehicle to display the Palmer Hamilton brand to the world.”

With pops of color coordinating with their furniture and freestanding lightboxes, the fabric frame walls helped create an enclosed space that highlighted products and presented a pop-up trade show experience for trade show visitors.

Imitating a classroom setting, Palmer Hamilton used a freestanding lightbox arch with graphics that read “Empowering educators and engaging students,” which brings us back to our original point: if people aren’t enjoying the space you put them in, what makes you think they’ll be engaged and loyal to your brand?

After rolling up the graphics and quickly disassembling the aluminum frames, Baergen said “[The company’s] trade show booths blew away all the other booths at the show, hands-down. Not only did our booths impress those who work so hard to produce the superior products that we fabricate, and give them a vision for their continued involvement, but also the booths stole away the breath of competitors, potential customers, dealers, and other trade show staff.”

So do you believe us yet about creating an SEG environment for your brand? Ready or not, now’s the time to do just that. Whether you’re decking out a trade show, revamping a retail store, or yearning for new décor around the office, SEG Systems has your back when it comes to being on time, on brand, and on budget.

The Thought

Picture this: it’s time to give your store a makeover. What do you see? What do you want your customers to see? If you have innovative retail ideas, SEG Systems is known for making them happen. Don’t believe me? Keep scrollin’ and see for yourself.

The Rendering

While working with an agency, this retail store had a dream of screen feature walls, mannequin risers, and pedestals – all made from custom millwork. Having worked with SEG Systems in the past, this Portland-based agency knew they could trust us to get the job done. After mocking up a few renderings, SEG Systems hit the ground running to make this dream a reality.

Rendering of Custom Retail Design

THE MANUFACTURING

With custom millwork capabilities, SEG Systems designed an innovative retail display by building a replica of the rendering and included a large-scale lightbox. The silicone edge graphic lightbox gave the industrial space more of a natural feel, while the millwork screen made up of 1″x3″ soft maple set the tone for a more private area that was dedicated to that specific product launch.

Let’s keep moving. Outside of the millwork walls was a mannequin base made of clear-coated maple plywood surrounded by gloss-black laminate. The base was notched to make install a breeze (see what we did there?) for an acrylic graphic mounted to the back to add dimension and color to the merchandise. The pedestals that were to be scattered throughout the store were also made of soft maple, but we added an acrylic surround to give the pedestals added dimension.

The Reality

Reality check: just because SEG is in our name doesn’t mean that’s all we’re capable of. We may have started with fabric frames and lightboxes, but over time have expanded our capabilities and passions.
